The design type about the icon should be kept in interesting,the color should be abundant and full of vigor, because the present system supports icons as 32 icons, and the edge to be smooth. After finishing drawing each icon in vector procedure, and then can drawn the picture perfectly with Adobe Photoshop. This note is written for the designer specially. Design characteristics of the icon
(1)Color should be in full, it is supplement part to WindowsXP appearance .
(2)Different angles and perspectivity characteristic have added dynamic vigor for the picture.
(3)The corner of the element is very soft, and rounded slightly.
(4)The light source lies in the upper left corner of the icon, have other parts around illuminating icon at the same time.
(5)The gradation zone result makes the icon have three-dimensional effects , and then make the appearance of the icon more plump .

Windows XP icon has four kinds of size, propose using size the following four:
(1)48*48 pixel
(2)32*32 pixel
(3)24*24 pixel
(4)16*16 pixel
Icon color depth support
WindowsXP supports 32 icons. 32 icons are added 8 alpha passway for 24 pictures. Make the icon edge very smooth, and merge with the background.
Each WindowsXP icon should include the following three color profundity , in order to support different monitors showing and seting up:

The target's angle and grouping
Perspectivity net used in WindowsXP design icon: Not all targets use complicated pictures of 16*16 to obtain better result. Some targets usually show with the ocular picture : File icon , the symbol icon (such as warning or information icon ) , single target's icon (such as the magnifer)

Projection

Can realize this kind of result in Photoshop , it will be described in the later section of the guide.If want to add the projection for the picture , please double click on picture story of the picture in Photoshop, choose Drop Shadow. Then alter the Angle to 135, Distance to 2, Size to 2. The projection is that 75% the opaque and black at this moment.
Outline
Draw XP design icon , it can be made clearer by adding the picture outline, can guarantee picture have a better result at the different background color.
Concept
While designing icons , please consider the following conditions:
Using the already conception so as to ensure that has expressed the ideas of users trully. Consider icon by which kind of form will be appeared in user interface environment , and how to be used as one section of the icon collection. Consider the culture background of the picture. Avoid using the letter , word , hand or face in the icon. Must show people or the user with the icon, please make its popularization as much as possible with icon. If the picture in the icon is made up by a lot of targets , should consider how to make the picture smaller in size . The targets proposed used in the icon does not exceed three. As for the size of 16*16 , can also consider deleting some targets or simplifying the picture to make it easier to recognize.
Transparent tool
Open Gif Movie Gear (GMG ) communication frame, among them show your icon. Use the suction tool to click the background color of the icon. This color will be altered for being dark and yellowish green (or the color that elect to be the transparent background color in GMG). Repeat all 4 and 8 frames. If want to keep icons , please choose File->Save Icon As ....
Establish tool column
Except when Windows tool fence icon use projection, the design used is the same as other icons. Because the toolbar icon is very small, propose you use the simple picture.If show by way of directlying perceived through the senses the picture can express the meaning of the icon clearly, needn't use other complicated ways.
Establish AVI
WindowsXP uses 8 AVI. Establishment of the course of avi file is the same as course of the establishment icon- prepare the picture in Photoshop, then pull it to GMG. According to guiding, establish 8 icons followingly, please. If want to use GMG to keep AVI , please transfer to File->Export As->AVI file.
When establishment avi file , please consider the following factors: Use pinkish red (R255 G0 B255 ) as the transparent background color. In Photoshop, the important one point is not to present stray picture element. Please set pack ability to 0 , confirm that has not chosen the cancelling sawtooth .
